Story
Maria’s life did not begin like that of other children, it began with a battle for survival. She was born with hydrocephalus and spina bifida (myelomeningocele), and from her earliest days she underwent surgeries and had a shunt placed in an attempt to save her life. Today, the child suffers from severe immune deficiency and constantly needs medications, vitamins, and injections to protect her from any infection that could threaten her life. The family lives in a house severely damaged by the earthquake, barely protected by a tarp covering the cracks. They recently returned from a difficult treatment journey in Lebanon after the costs exhausted them, only to face an even harsher reality. The father works as a daily laborer, some days he works, and other days he cannot due to weather conditions, while supporting three school-aged children and struggling to provide for his sick daughter’s needs. This child urgently needs a compassionate stand, every bit of support may be the reason she stays alive.
