Malak, a mother of one, found herself alone after separating from her husband, facing life’s challenges on her own. She does everything she can to provide for her daily needs. Living in a modest home, she sells biscuits from a small sidewalk stall in Bab Jeneen—her only source of income. Every morning, she carries a bag of biscuits in one hand and an old pillow in the other, on which her tired child rests his head. She sits at the edge of the sidewalk, laying out her meager goods, watching her little one sleep amid the noise, fearing he might wake up hungry with nothing to eat.
