Rakan’s journey of displacement began in the countryside of Damascus, when he was forced to leave his home and everything he owned in search of safety for his family. He settled in the countryside of Aleppo and tried to rebuild his life from nothing, under extremely harsh conditions. Just as he was starting over, a devastating earthquake struck the area. His home was completely destroyed, and he lost his beloved daughter beneath the rubble. Today, Rakan lives in a rented house that lacks even the most basic necessities. Despite his disability (after a shelling incident led to the amputation of his leg) he continues to work tirelessly to provide food for his children and pay the rent. Rakan’s story is not only one of tragedy, but one of resilience. It is the story of a man who refused to break, even after so much around him was shattered.
